Selected representatives from the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) participated in the Health Agency Training (HAT) Train-the-Trainer program in 1998-99. Five state and local personnel from Arkansas and seven from Kansas participated in the train-the-trainer program in Basic Epidemiology and/or Basic Statistics. While both states have experienced success with the Train-the-Trainer program, the supporting infrastructure and level of institutionalization of the training are quite different. The Basic Epidemiology and Statistics training in Arkansas is supported by an active training office, and the training has been incorporated into the quarterly training schedule for state and local public health personnel. The courses are planned and offered at regular intervals throughout the state. In addition, one trainer from Arkansas has had the opportunity to present the Basic Epidemiology course in Russia, and in doing so, has had the course notebook and audiovisual aids translated to Russian. While Kansas does not have a designated training office, training remains an important activity, especially at the community level. KDHE structures its training around available resources. Through strong collaboration within KDHE and dedication of the HAT trainers, courses have been provided to both state and local public and mental health professionals on an as needed basis. These states provide two examples of the impact and diversity of the Train-the-Trainer program.
