Pharmacy, podiatry, optometry and dentistry (PPOD) are underutilized channels for the delivery of health messages to people with diabetes. The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) PPOD Work Group was established to promote the principles of NDEP by utilizing pharmacy, podiatry, optometry, and, dentistry organizations and providers to increase the awareness of and access to quality care for persons with diabetes especially for racial ethnic minorities who may not have a primary care physician. This presentation will describe PPOD's mission, objectives and strategies to: 1) utilize PPOD channels to disseminate diabetes messages; 2) increase the diabetes knowledge base of PPOD providers; 3) increase access to diabetes care through collaboration among PPOD organizations and providers; and inform policymakers and health care purchasers about the need for integrated diabetes care. The collaboration encouraged by NDEP/PPOD among these health professions is unique and will increase access to education and care for people with diabetes. Additionally, it will strengthen the diabetes team approach to care along with other providers such as physicians and diabetes educators.

Learning Objectives: The audience will describe the role of pharmacy, podiatry, optometry and dentistry in diabetes education and how the National Diabetes Education Program will strengthen it
