Community Based Sexual Health Education: Experience in Argentina

Teen pregnancy is a priority issue in Buenos Aires Province because affects adolescent and community development. Objective: To present a community based educational experience to improve the skills for decision making related to sexuality. Abstract text: An intersectoral team was created. Strategies and results were as follows. Advocacy: the issue of teen pregnancy was installed within the policy agenda. Development of a community educational activity based on 3 relevant moments: 1)problematization, 2)information, and 3)choice distinction. Demonstration experiences were carried out in 3 municipalities with a total number of 720 participants (78% adolescents and 22% adults). Evaluation : 85% of the participants found the experience very good or excellent; 87.3% visualized the methodology as very good or excellent; 83.4% considered that the organization was very good or excellent and, 88.5% mentioned that the social environment within the experience was supportive. 80.6% referred that this was a highly or very highly learning experience. The level of satisfaction increased according to the progression through the 3 moments: 72% (problematization), 83,6% (information), and 84% (choice distinction). Communication resources were created. Management teams and extension: 100 teams of different municipalities of the Province were trained for local and self-management. Final Remarks: The community based sexual health education approach makes relevant the emotional aspects of the sexuality. The implemented methodology resulted in a useful tool to empower people to make their own decisions regarding sexual health. This initiative promoted the political commitment, the intersectoral link, and community participation.
