Michelle Mussuto, BS and Jacquolyn Duerr, MPH. California Department of Health Services, Cancer Detection Section, 601 N 7th Street, MS-428, PO Box 942732, Sacramento, CA 94234, 916-445-3656, mmussuto@dhs.ca.gov

The position of Community Health Program Manager was created to address the inadequacy of cancer education and research resources available to the California Department of Health Services, Cancer Detection Section (CDS) staff and its community partnerships. It serves the cancer education needs of two statewide programs: the Breast Cancer Early Detection Program (BCEDP), consisting of 14 community partnerships and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP), consisting of 33 community contractors. Responsibilities include: 1) conducting statewide needs assessments on specific education materials and resources; 2) developing and revising materials to address the specific language, literacy and cultural needs of the major ethnic groups in the state of California; 3) identifying, reviewing and cataloging cancer education and research materials; 4) creating and maintaining on-line Access databases and in-house resource library; 5) developing, facilitating and coordinating an ordering and distribution system to all community partnerships. In meeting these responsibilities, the Community Health Program Manager, at a minimum, a) interfaces with graphic artists, translators, health care providers and health educators for revisions and b) collaborates with external agencies, other state government agencies and CDS ethnic task forces to ensure success of marketing programs. The Education Materials Clearinghouse is a simple, flexible model for potential replication in other states.

Learning Objectives: Define the basics of developing a large system of education material distribution and community communication. Assess the gap areas of outreach education materials and holes in the distribution system
