Student organizations are critical for the advancement of students who will one day enter the professional world. An organization like Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) caters to the needs of students who must perform fluently in communication techniques, leadership and citizenship. Naturally, there should be a cross-fertilization between groups such as HOSA and the American Public Health Association (APHA). As part of the community, students interact with the individuals around them and develop the skills necessary for community health practice. Additionally, students can help to ensure that community health increasingly becomes the concern of all members of a community.
This presentation will demonstrate how student organizations train students to become active members of their community, and thereby help to eliminate disparities within the community. HOSA is a student lead organization focussing on the preparation of competent healthcare workers for the 21st century and beyond. A key component in the structure of the organization is the appointment and training of the Executive Representatives who will set an example for future Community health leaders. The importance of community health is emphasized through competitions in areas such as CPR, First Aid, preparation of speeches on health-related topics, and demonstration of nursing aid skills. National officers are also involved with marketing and role modelling in the community to enhance the quality of performance of future Healthcare workers
Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to articulate a model for building student leadership and communication techniques to further community health
