The U.S. General Accounting Office will assess what progress NIH has made in implementing the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993, which strengthened previous NIH policy on the inclusion of women in clinical study populations of research funded by NIH. This study will report on changes in NIH's grant review process and will analyze NIH tracking data on the inclusion of women, both NIH-wide and by institutes and centers. The study will report on the outreach, coordination, and funding activities of the NIH Office of Women's Health Research to develop an agenda on women's health research and encourage NIH support of such research. In addition, it will report on NIH expenditures on research that affects women's health, using various definitions, and discuss the difficulties of identifying which expenditures belong in this category.
