Julie C.T. Dietz, MS, Ph, DE, Department of Health Studies, Eastern Illinois University, 600 Lincoln, Charleston, IL 61920, 217-581-6445, cfjcd@eiu.edu and Melanie B. Mills, PhD, Speech Communication, Eastern Illinois University, 600 Lincoln, Charleston, IL 61920.

The purpose of this study was to document both lay and professional perceptions of individual responsibility for one's health status in order to document areas of difference which may lead to communication problems in the therapeutic interaction. Perceptions of health status responsbility may affect information given and/or received, therapeutic options offered and/or accepted and, ultimately, the progression and resolution of the patient/client's health condition.

Learning Objectives: 1. Identify the characteristics of health conditions and/or therapeutic interactions likely to reveal differences in perceptions of individual responsibility. 2. Apply the above information to own personal and/or professional experiences and interactions
