Wellness risk factors survey results: Comparison of tribal and urban American Indians residing in California

Poster session will present the results of a behavioral risk factor survey modified for American Indians. This survey was administered to American Indian patients at Indian health clinics in tribal and urban communities throughout California. Areas of comparison between tribal and urban communities will include diet and nutrition, physical activity, female/male cancer screening, prevalance of diabetes, hypertension, substance abuse, domestic violence, accidents/injuries, and use of traditional health practices. Recommendations based on survey findings will be offered to ameliorate health disparieties of California's American Indian population.

Learning Objectives: After viewing poster session, participant will be able to: 1. Articulate demographic differences between tribal and urban American Indians residing in California. 2. Describe patterns of wellness behaviors in the areas of physical activity, diet & nutrition, cancer screening, and use of traditional health practices. 3. Identify differences in tribal/urban patterns of substance abuse, domestic violence,management of chronic illness, and gambling. 4. Discuss recommendations for amelioration of health disparieties of American Indians
