The objective of this project was to promote quality diabetes educational materials that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. During a national meeting for the Asian and Pacific Islander American Diabetes Initiative in 1997, participants identified the need to collect and review existing diabetes educational materials for AAPIs. AAPCHO has collected diabetes educational materials for AAPIs from various community health centers and organizations across the United States and Canada, and has conducted an extensive review of these materials. Materials in 13 AAPI languages and English were reviewed. The review process involved the following steps: 1) identify reviewers, 2) develop criteria and an evaluation tool for approving the material, 3) technical reviewers reviewed the English version of materials for scientific accuracy and appropriateness of information and recommended materials for further review by the multilingual reviewers, 5) each language has a minimum of one team with three multilingual reviewers review the materials for cultural and linguistic appropriateness and determine which materials will be recommended, 7) all reviewers (technical and multilingual) approve the list to be recommended, 8) disseminate and promote the recommended list, and 9) plan for future development of new materials based on gaps identified from the review. 150 diabetes educational materials for AAPIs were reviewed. 22 of these materials were recommended. Due to changes in diabetes management in the past few years, many diabetes educational materials were outdated and inappropriate for use. Having quality diabetes educational materials is necessary for teaching diabetes self-management in AAPI communities.
