The problem of youth violence has remained a serious public health issue in most communities throughout America, particularly those in urban settings. The problem is no less intense in small communities than in large communities. To begin to address this problem in the city of Chester, a small urban community of 40,000 people in southeastern Pennsylvania, several initiatives were developed to heighten community awareness of the problem and to perform an intervention. One successful initiative has been the implementation of a summer basketball camp. This presentation will provide a review of the program over a 3 year period and highlight the benefit of a governmental and community-based partnership for an effective violence prevention strategy.
