Health department involvement in injury control

This presentation will focus on APHA policies that recommend various roles for health departments. It will include a review of policies: 5706 - Accident Prevention; 5902 - Full Time Direction of Accident Prevention Programs in State Health Departments; 8809 - Injury Control Programs in State and Local Health Departments; 9927 - Injury and Violence Prevention and Control Programs in State and Local Health Departments. Examples of the ways in which each of these policies has affected health department involvement in injury control activities will be highlighted. In addition, the evolution of health department involvement and future potential will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 1. To describe the evolution of policy related to health deparment involvement in injury control activities; 2. To discuss the implications of the most recent policy related to health department involvement; 3. To highlight ways in which existing policies can form the basis for developing injury control capacity in health departments
