The Families and Schools Together for Asthma Management (FAMILIAS), is a five-year community-based study using innovative approaches in intervention planning and development. FAMILIAS targets Hispanic families of children with asthma who attend an elementary school in Houston, Texas. The salient factors influencing asthma identification (diagnosis) and self-management among Hispanic children and families were identified using both qualitative and quantitative strategies. A qualitative needs assessment was conducted utilizing focus groups, one to one interviews & clinical observation with Hispanic parents of children with asthma along with interviews of health care providers . Additionally, quantitative data was obtained through two previously funded asthma projects that identified factors related to asthma self-management among Hispanic children. Results from the needs assessment indicated unique factors influencing asthma self-management among Hispanic children and families. Some of these include: a lack of understanding of asthma as a chronic illness, problems related to communication with health care providers, and a reliance on home remedies & fold healing. Intervention Mapping, a process for developing theory and evidence-based health promotion interventions, was then used to delineate objectives, methods and strategies, and an implementation plan so that the program would effectively influence changes in behavior and environmental conditions related to asthma management. The paper will discuss the needs assessment results and describe the program planning process using Intervention Mapping to develop a school-based intervention with a strong family component for Hispanic children and families designed to increase asthma self-management and effective utilization of health care services for asthma control.

Learning Objectives: 1. identify a process for developing theory and evidence-based health promotion interventions, 2. describe the program planning process using Intervention Mapping for an implementation plan that effectively influences changes in behavior and environmental conditions related to asthma management
