Deborah Rose, PhD, Division of Health Interview Statistics, National Center for Health Statistics, 6525 Belcrest Road, Room 870, Hyattsville, MD 20782, (301)456-4466, dxr1@cdc.gov

The prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults 18 and over in the United States in 1997 was 24.7%. This has not changed from the 1995 rate, although the Year 2000 Objective is to reduce cigarette smoking to no more than 15% of the US adult population. This presentation will explore the data from the Prevention ‘98 module of the National Health Interview Survey, which also includes information on other forms of tobacco use, includingt pipes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco, to see if the trends remain the same.

Learning Objectives: To recognize and analyze the differences in smoking prevalence by race, sex and ethnic groups in the US
