Despite extensive research into the background and causes of alcohol and drug abuse among individuals, and on the efficacy of various treatment programs, little was actually known about the treatment practices carried out within the nation’s substance abuse treatment facilities—the “black box” of treatment. The Substance Abuse Treatment Study (SATS) addressed the “black box” of group substance abuse treatment by collecting information about the content, process, and context of group treatment practices from a sample of treatment facilities.
Nineteen facilities participated in the study. Data are drawn from a sample of 17 facility directors, 94 treatment staff, 74 group leaders and 566 clients, and represent a description of the characteristics of facilities, staff, clients, treatment programs, and therapy groups. In addition, the effect of observation on the group process was examined. Field procedures were standardized for the study. The study methodology was viewed positively by the facility directors, as demonstrated through the quality assurance meetings. However, certain challenges were faced and the applied solutions will be highlighted.
Chi-square analyses were conducted to measure associations among different variables. Results indicate that although facilities varied in size, facility structure is similar across facilities as is staff structure and client population. Services offered to clients vary across facilities, and many facilities endorse similar therapeutic goals. Group members and group leaders reported no effect of observation, nor method of observation, on the treatment process.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the characteristics of facilities, staff, clients, and therapy groups 2. Discuss the instruments and methodology of substance abuse treatment study 3. Facility structure, staff structure and client population are similar across facilities
