The Regional Early Childhood Immunization Network (RECIN) is an on-line, real-time immunization registry, first deployed in north central Wisconsin in 1996. RECIN has actively recruited both public and private providers. Several counties in the region have achieved or nearly achieved 100% participation by all immunization providers. As a result of Wisconsin's strong immunization law, schools are the primary player in tracking and monitoring immunization data of school age children. As RECIN has become populated with school age immunization data, schools have expressed a desire to access the database. A task force of public health, private providers, and school personnel was formed in fall, 1999 to redesign the system to accommodate the needs of schools in their immunization reporting function. This presentation will describe the challenges of adapting a health-oriented database to meet the needs of an educational environment. Confidentiality, data management, and work flow issues will be discussed. Pilot implementation is anticipated in fall, 2000, so timely, reality-based lessons will be shared.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the advantages to schools to have access to an immunization registry; 2. Discuss the challenges and adaptations necessary to make a registry fully functional for a school
