Use of diet analysis software has become more commonplace as health consumers, students, teachers, and other professionals try to find out more about nutritional products. Some software programs enable users to create recipes and produce food labels that have the same information required by the 1994 Nutrition Education Labeling Act. An advantage of this feature is that the user can develop alternative recipes for some of the expensive nutritional products on the market (e.g. “sports bars,” carbohydrate loading drinks, protein powders, and fluid-electrolyte solutions), and find out the comparable nutrition information with relative ease. Recipes can then be adjusted to simulate the name-brand, often very expensive commercial products. This session demonstrates some innovative ways diet analysis software can assist the average consumer in developing nutritional products, supplying nutrition information, and producing creative nutrition education displays.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Develop a nutrition label using diet analysis software 2.Develop a recipe comparable to a commercial nutritional supplement 3. Display creative nutrtion education materials utilizing diet analysis software 4. Provide consumer information that is cost-saving and enhances nutrition education
