Within the context of a comprehensive and collaborative approach to violence prevention, this paper will conclude the session by addressing School-to-Home Initiatives. Schools do not operate in a vacuum. As part of a larger community they must continuously explore the context of the larger environment and reach out to the community beyond their walls to share information and build partnerships. The most critical of these are partnerships with families- a vital piece in the effort to prevent violence in schools. To create home-school partnerships we drew on our own partnership between a middle school seeking help to prevent violence and a graduate nursing program with expertise to share and graduate students eager and willing to work with students and staff. This paper describes the development and implementation of The Backpack Project- thematic backpacks which go from school to home. The backpacks provide a synergistic win-win situation for both the schools, as a way to involve parents; and for graduate students, as a meaningful and pragmatic course assignment. Students will present and discuss backpacks specifically themed and developed to help prevent violence.
Learning Objectives: Participants will: 1) describe the organizing framework for the thematic backpacks intervention 2) list three learning objectives for graduate PHN students met by this project 3) decribe the thematic backpack intervention 4) list three categories of components to guide backpack development 5) discuss ways to disseminate backpacks to the family
