Abstract #16457

Introduction: Primary Prevention: The Integration Concept of Occupational and Environmental Health

Rafael Moure-Eraso, PhD, Department of Work Environment, University of Massachusetts Lowell, One University Avenue, Lowell, MA 01854, 978-934-3271, Rafael_Moure@uml.edu

Dr. Rafael Moure-Eraso of the Department of Work Environment of the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) will introduce this important panel of presenters. Two doctoral candidates return to share the results of their research looking at the association between pollution prevention and worker safety and health. Darius Sivin of Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health will present preliminary results of his study of the impact of pollution prevention on occupational exposures at an air conditioner manufacturer. Karla Armenti of UML will present her findings of the effects of pollution prevention programs on worker safety and health at four printed wire board facilities.

In addition, Marian Flum, also a doctoral candidate of UML, will co-present with Jack Bailey, Director of Environmental Affairs, Health and Safety, of Acushnet Rubber Co., Inc. on Acushnet’s policy of including worker health and safety considerations in targeting chemicals for reduction or elimination, as well as the company’s encouragement of active worker participation in developing solutions to both occupational and environmental issues.

Of critical importance to this panel is the participation of Mr. Matt Gillen, CIH, of the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics of the EPA. As an "agency" representative, Mr. Gillen will share his experience regarding what occupational health and environmental specialists need to know to protect workers and the environment. His presentation will identify the professional practice "blindspots" that create obstacles to linking together occupational and environmental approaches, and will discuss the federal programs that provide the greatest opportunities for integrated approaches.
