Burke Michael, MPH, Department of Communication, Michigan State University, 456 Communication Arts Building, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824, 517-355-7569, burkemic99@hotmail.com

At the college level, public health is typically taught via classroom instruction. One subject where public health techniques and issues are addressed is the field of health communication. Health communication theory and praxis are taught to college students via lectures, discussions, assignments and exercises. Implications for public health practice are an important theme underlying all aspects of classroom instruction pertaining to health communication. There are many exercises that can be done to create competent public health professionals. The incorporation of these exercises into public health related classes may help instructors to better prepare their students for future employment in the field of public health.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, my audience will be able to do the following: 1. Discuss the importance of teaching social science theory in classes relating to public health. 2. List several methods of incorporating common public health practices and health behavior theories into learning exercises
