Abstract #16684

Efforts to Expand Health Insurance Coverage in Wisconsin and Elsewhere

Peggy Rosenzweig, RankingMember, Audit Committee, Wisconsin State Senate, Madison, WI, , N/A

The ranking member of the audit committee of the Wisconsin State Senate will discuss efforts to expand health insurance coverage in Wisconsin, as well as in other states. She will also discuss possible future state strategies.

Learning Objectives: 1. Survey the history of how various state legislatures enacted legislation that expanded health insurance coverage 2. Evaluate the quality of that legislation. How far does it go toward universal coverage? Is it expandable to groups that are not yet covered and/or services that are not yet covered? Is it based on some underlying principle or is it just grabbing what you can get? 3. Evaluate the next steps. What are prospective strategies for further improvement in insurance coverage? What are the merits/ weakness of each prospective strategy?
