Abstract #16733

Stakeholders in Boston

Robert J. Marra, MBA, Coordinator, Mass. Immigrant Health Access Coalition, Health Care for All, Boston, MA, N/A, marra@mail.hcfa.org and Meizhu Lui, Coordinator, Boston Health Access Project, Health Care for All, Boston, MA, N/A, sso@mhv.net.

Mr. Marra and Ms. Lui were both working at Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center) in 1994-97 while privatization was being debated. They will describe the coalition of union leaders, BCH staff and alumni, community groups, city legislators, and others who struggled to highlight the public obligations of the hospital. They will also discuss their current role as advocates who monitor health care access and challenge hospitals like BMC to be more responsive to the needs of low-income communities.

Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will understand the multiple roles (as defenders, critics, lobbyists, allies, etc.) that stakeholder groups can play in regard to their public hospitals 2. Participants will recognize the similarities and differences in the experience of stakeholder groups and their public hospitals in three cities: New York, Washington, and Boston
