Abstract #16810

An occupational therapist's contribution to vision care with the elderly

Dolores Rogers, Jewish Guild for the Blind, 15 West 65 Street, New York, NY 10023, N/A, N/A

Low vision optometrists enhance the quality of life for the elderly patient by exploring various systems available to assist in maximizing vision. The occupational therapist can ensure that selected devices become functional in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) with intervention that can address several possible conditions that can interfere:

1. Arthritic conditions in shoulders and hands that prevent comfortable and secure holding of some devices.

2. Poor hand coordination, ranging from mild to significant tremors.

3. Cognitive deficits that may be subtle, but interfere with learning of adaptive techniques.

4. Patient resistance and/or depression. Patients often expect ordinary glasses to reinstate previous reading ability. They may benefit from occupational therapy intervention to maximize functional use of prescribed devices.
