Abstract #16987

Phantom Limb Pain and Therapeutic Touch

Eric Leskowitz, MD, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, MA, , meyers@bu.edu

Recent negative publicity notwithstanding, the widely used nursing technique called Therapeutic Touch has been proven effective in a wide range of conditions, even though its mechanism of action is unclear. Recent applications of this technique to the chronic pain condition known as phantom limb pain raise important questions about the nature of pain and awareness, and suggest that subtle electromagnetic fields may be involved in the pathogenesis and treatment of this disorder.

Learning Objectives: Understand the use of therapeutic touch in the treatment of disabling limb pain
