Elizabeth Jackson, BA, Division of Health Promotion Statistics, National Center for Health Statistics, 6525 Belcrest Road Room 770, Hyattsville, MD 20782, 301-458-4288, emw6@cdc.gov

Healthy People 2000, the national prevention initiative, serves as the cornerstone of a comprehensive agenda to improve the health of all Americans. It has more than 300 objectives organized into 22 priority areas with quantifiable targets set for individuals, organizations, and communities. As a prevention plan for the 1990's, Healthy People 2000 addressed not only the prevention of premature deaths and illness, but also the prevention of disabilities and secondary conditions (problems that arise from, or are directly related to, the main cause of disability). The 22 priority areas include 34 objectives that directly address people with disabilities. These objectives either have targets for people with existing disabilities or target the causes of disabling conditions.

Learning Objectives: 1. Increase awareness of final assessment of progress towards the Year 2000 objectives for people with disabilities. 2. Identification of specific objectives at increased risk for adverse health outcomes. 3. Increase understanding of the relationship between the Healthy People 2000 and 2010 objectives for specific population groups
