This session will provide an overview of the Children's Safety Network (CSN)National Injury and Violence Prevention Resource Center’s review of the new state-selected injury and violence performance measures, and the CSN strategic response to maternal and child health (MCH) state agencies to assist in accomplishing the performance measures. Two of the eighteen required MCH national performance measures in the Title V state block grant deal specifically with injury. These required national performance measures include motor vehicle-related deaths and suicide deaths. In addition, state MCH agencies are also required to identify state-selected performance measures that are based on a state-level needs assessment completed every five years. The assessment and subsequent state-selected performance measures will be completed in 2000. These state-selected performance measures may include additional injury and violence-related objectives. To assist states in achieving both the national and state-selected injury-related injury and violence performance measures, the CSN uses a number of strategies at the state level. Examples of these strategies include state site visits, providing technical assistance, provision of resource linkages, integrating injury prevention into existing programs, and participation in regional injury prevention networks/activities. Presentation will include a descriptive analysis of CSN's review of state-selected injury and violence related performance measures. In addition, CSN’s strategic response to assist states in addressing their performance will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the role the CSN plays in assisting states to accomplish Title V performance measures. 2. Recognize the scope of activities of state MCH agencies in addressing national and state-selected Title V performance measures
