Edward M. Reyes, MD, MPH, Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center, University of California, 1855 Folsom St., Suite 520, San Francisco, CA 94143, 415-502-8196, emreyes@itsa.ucsf.edu
In the 2000-2001 training year, the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Hawai’i AETC at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, entered into a collaboration with the Pacific Island Health Officers Association (PIHOA) to develop short term, immediate training on HIV care and treatment in the Pacific Jurisdictions.
The collaboration is part of a long-term capacity building effort funded by the HRSA HIV/AIDS Bureau aimed at addressing several critical issues.
- The immediate and long-term HIV clinical training of clinicians.
- Building the capacity of health professional associations to continue education and training for practitioners and other treatment staff. Specifically, the collaboration recognizes the Pacific Basin Medical Association and the Association of Pacific Nurses Leadership Council as providers of relevant and culturally appropriate continuing education partners.
- Examining HIV care and treatment policy implications for PIHOA members.
Needs assessment data and progress on the following four objectives will be presented in this session.
- Strengthen the clinical knowledge and skills of Pacific health professionals in the diagnosis and management of HIV disease, sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and other related comorbidities.
- Improve access to clinical information that is relevant to HIV, STDs and other comorbidities in the context of each jurisdiction.
- Establish or augment points of expertise within each jurisdiction for ongoing support of other clinicians and caregivers.
- Strengthen the capacity of health professional associations to assess needs, mount continuing education programs, disseminate information and support continuous quality improvement.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- describe HIV epidemiology in the Pacific Jurisdictions,
- discuss cultural aspects of the epidemic as they influence HIV care,
- and identify training strategies to address the diverse needs of Pacific Island populations.
