Abstract #17193

Labor Unions as Stakeholders

Ann Kempski, Asssociate Director for Public Policy, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, Washington, DC, , akempski@afscme.org

AFSCME has over 300,000 members working in health care, ranging from physicians to food-service workers. Based on her experience with AFSCME across the country, Ms. Kempski will discuss the stakeholder role that labor unions play in public hospitals, both as allies, advocating for the hospitals’ financial and institutional needs, and as critics, challenging them to improve their quality of care and to adhere to their unique public mission. Ms. Kempski will also describe AFSCME’s important role in shaping (and sometimes stopping) hospital privatization.
