Increasing Access and Continuity of HIV Care in the Virginia Department of Corrections

Incarcerated populations inclue many with or at high risk for HIV infection. Providing adequate access to quality of care and continuity for inmates remains a challenge. This paper will describe a collaborative HIV training and clinical care programs between the Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia Department of Corrections which include training of health care providers and the treatment of inmates with HIV at the HIV clinic at VCU. The approach and outcomes of the telemedicine clinical education with the Virginia DOC will be described. Preliminary data indicates that the program has reduced cost and improved the quality of HIV care. Another major component of this program is the coordination of discharge planning for inmates with HIV leaving the correctional facilities.
