Abstract #17413

Targeting Lead Screening: State and Local Efforts to Reach Children in the Medicaid Program

Nancy M. Tips, MA, Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, 3206 Kensington Road, Avondale Estates, GA 30002, 404-296-5850, ntips@mindspring.com

As a group, young children enrolled in Medicaid are at extremely high risk for lead exposure. Federal Medicaid policy requires screening of all Medicaid enrolled children at the ages of 12 and 24 months, but many states have had difficulty in carrying out this requirement. State childhood lead poisoning prevention programs are working with state Medicaid agencies to identify strategies for increasing lead screening among children enrolled in Medicaid.

Learning Objectives: identify strategies that states are using to combine the efforts of state Medicaid agencies and health department programs to prevent lead poisoning
