Lead exposure is unevenly distributed among California's diverse and multiethnic population. The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention (CLPP) Branch, California Department of Health Services conducted a planning process to target blood lead screening, based on collected data on blood lead levels and on exposure patterns. Local CLPP programs are tailoring the resulting policy to address local conditions. To promote the plan, the CLPP Branch is developing a provider outreach and education plan in collaboration with California District IX, American Academy of Pediatrics. Objectives: Develop an evidence-based statewide plan with maximum input from a broad array of constituents. Monitor the effectiveness of the plan over 5 years in increasing lead screening among target populations. Method: Form a planning committee, assemble data, divide into work groups to review data and screening policy components, develop and circulate draft plans, finalize and widely disseminate statewide plan. Allow plan to be tailored to address localized lead sources or risk groups. Develop an evaluation plan. Outcome: The presenter will describe the planning process, strategies used to promote and implement the plan, and outline the evaluation component.
Learning Objectives: Describe a statewide planning process to achieve effective childhood lead screening and follow-up care; Identify strategies for developing, distributing and monitoring performance with a statewide screening plan
