Elsie E. Eyer, MS, Community & Family Health Services, Arizona Dept of Health Services, 1740 W. Adams, Suite 307, Phoenix, AZ 85007, (602) 542-1223, eeyer@hs.state.az.us

Occurring immediately after the presidential and congressional elections, this session will evaluate the political realities facing us as a result. Speakers will prognosticate on the climate for health care reform, who the players will be, and the overall likelihood of movement and constructive change. The findings and positions developed by the Work Group over the preceding nine months will be reviewed and discussed, and concrete steps suggested to incorporate these positions and objectives into the political landscape in an effective way to get us closer to the objective of universal access to quality health care. A particular focus will be to identify the role of public health policy and practice in realizing this goal, and to discuss strategies for integrating the public health perspective into the current and future political debate on health care reform.

Learning Objectives: 1.) Review and understand the political "fallout" from the recent presidential and congressional elections. 2.) Review the positions on universal health care of the successful candidates and the findings/positions developed by the Work Group. 3.) Identify strategies to realize universal health care as defined in these positions and in light of the current political climate. 4.) Define the role of public health policy and practice in attaining the goal of universal access to quality health care
