Abstract #17558

The Clinical Impact of the Human Genome Project

Paul R. Billings, MD, PhD, Council for Responsible Genetics, Cambridge, MA 02138, , paul.billings@med.va.gov

Novel insights into the pathogenesis of disease are needed as well as new therapeutics. The Human Genome Project has been touted as a driver for these future developments. But what are the limitations of this approach? Preoccupation with genetics in medical research may foster a non-productive reductionism; in clinical settings, genetic discrimination, segregation and a new eugenics may arise. Using actual cases, these and related issues will be illuminated.
