The capacity of a community to create and sustain positive change has everything to do with improving long term population health status. How civic dialogue is conducted, leadership cultivated, information exchanged, social cohesion built and trust is developed -- underpins the ability to both change behavior and make informed policy decisions. The many facets of the broad-based "communities movement" have uncovered a set of learnings useful to the design and development of change processes. This overview will examine those principles and point to community factors core to realizing the goals of health for all and eliminating disparity.
