Abstract #17574

Stories from a Rural Perspective -- Rural South Carolina

Peggy Parker, EdD, PRO Hampton County, 500 Jackson Avenue, Hampton, SC 29924, (803) 943-4389, N/A

Until five years ago, discussions of community change in a rural county in South Carolina were confined to discussions between local elected officials. There were no available venues for citizens to express their hopes for a better way of life in Hampton County. The healthy communities concept was introduced to a small group of Hampton County citizens and this changed. This group leapt at the opportunity to voice their opinion and collectively study the county's quality of life indicators. Five years and eight county-wide forums later, PRO Hampton County (Pride, Respect, and Opportunity) is thriving as a healthy community non-profit organization with a staff of 3.5. Using the principles of healthy communities, the staff members along with hundreds of volunteers, are working in four key areas: Education, Health and Lifestyles, Economics, and Inter-group Relations. Specific projects have ranged from race relations – to diabetes – to family support.
