Education reform has become a national issue, and states have begun to struggle with the implementation of learning standards. New York State has developed a model of collaboration with higher education institutions (IHE) and K-12 settings to prepare new teachers to implement the Health Eduication Learning Standards. Representative of each IHE with a health teacher preparation program joined to address issues relative to health education, teacher preparation, and educational reform. The Higher Education group, now in its second year, has developed a training document to address current educational reform issues as they apply to health (Standards; Learning Experiences; Skill-based Health Education; Assessment; and Curriculum Integration) that will be used to train other colleagues in professional preparation programs. The Higher Education group has strengthened its relationship with the New York State Education Department, and has established an ongoing dialog about such issues as Health Education Program Recertification requirements, elementary health education, and proposed changes in the Commissioner's Regulations. An overview of the project, the training document, and lessons learned will be shared.

Learning Objectives: 1. Delineate how higher education and the K-12 schools can collaborate to prepare teachers. 2. Explain how to incorporate educational reform standards into professional preparation of teachers as they apply to the Health Education Standards
