Abstract #17688

State and university collaboration for a population-based health survey

George B. Abbott, MD, MPH, California Department of Health Services, Health Information and Strategic Planning, 1800 3rd Street, Rm 100, Box 942732, Sacramento, CA 94234-7320, 916/322-1223, pabbott@dhs.ca.gov

The California Department of Health Services is working with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the private Public Health Institute to develop and implement the California Health Interview Survey. This collaborative approach was determined to provide distinct advantages compared to the Department developing the survey on its own. CHIS involves obtaining funding from multiple levels of government, coordinating contractual obligations to meet requirements of multiple agencies, development of a unique instrument to assess the California population's health and access to health care, and cultural and linguistic aptation of survey questions.
