The selection of national objectives has implications for prevention programs at the national and state levels. Healthy People 2010 includes approximately 100 objectives for one select population: adolescents and young adults. On November 4, 1998, a live satellite broadcast was conducted as an initial step to engage states in a decade long effort to attain the Healthy People 2010 critical objectives for adolescents and young adults. Every state health department except one participated in this interactive broadcast program, during which they reviewed progress in attaining 70 plus Year 2000 objectives, and reviewed the draft critical objectives for the Year 2010. After the broadcast concluded, the state participants continued to meet to begin planning state-level actions that could be implemented over the next decade to improve adolescent health. Out of the broadcast grew the National Initiative to Improve Adolescent Health by the Year 2010, a collaborative effort involving government agencies, schools, employers, community-based organizations and others with a role in adolescent health. The National Initiative was developed to support states as they plan actions to attain the Initiative-identified 20 critical health objectives. Half of these critical objectives are injury-related. A Steering Committee is working with states to plan and implement state-level actions to improve adolescent health. For example, the Steering Committee is developing a Healthy People 2010 “companion document” on adolescent health to enable those at the state and local levels to implement concrete activities to achieve the critical objectives.
