In 1998, the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), began working with the World Health Organization's (WHO) Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI) on the development and implementation of a Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS). The GYTS is part of a WHO/UNICEF supported project on youth and tobacco. The GYTS is a school-based survey of students age 13-15 years and provides in-depth assessment of students’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to tobacco. The GYTS was conducted in twelve countries in 1999: Barbados, China, Costa Rica, Fiji, Jordan, Poland, Sri Lanka, Russian Federation, South Africa, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. An additional 29 countries are in the process of conducting the GYTS and 37 countries will be trained to conduct the GYTS during 2000-2001. This session will provide an overview of the GYTS and highlight some key findings from countries which have completed the GYTS.
