Abstract #17825

Brownfields: Community revitalization and public health

Jane B Sherman, Woonasquatucket River Greenway Project, The Providence Plan, 56 Pine Street, Providence, RI 02903, , shermanjcb@aol.com

The Woonasquatucket River Greenway Project is an urban revitalization initiative focusing on the restoration of the Woonasquatucket River and creation of green spaces, parks and a bicycle path along the river. The Greenway Project is a Brownfield Showcase Community and is located downstream of a Superfund site. Most inner city neighborhoods are confronted with vacant parcels that present opportunities for growth while containing potential health risks before, during and after remediation. Communities and neighborhoods that are multicultural, diverse and transient are presented with developments that have environmental, economic and health impacts. How can communities assimilate all the information, often couched in technical terms? This project has teamed with federal state and city agencies to promote understanding of the current environmental conditions and impacts of proposed changes. Some of the contaminants discussed within the communities include dioxin, PCB's, petroleum, and the impact of combined sewer overflows.
