Abstract #18008

Update on the evaluation of Pennsylvania's sexual abstinence initiative

Edward A. Smith, PhD and Susan Potter. Prevention Research Center, The Pennsylvania State University, Benedict House, State College, PA 16802, 814-865-1201, eas8@mail.psu.edu

Throughout Pennsylvania, over 6,000 youth are being served by 28 sites as part of Pennsylvania's Abstinence Initiative. Each of the 28 sites implements programs that are somewhat different in terms of the content, format, structure, and characteristics of the populations being served. As a result of this variation, a site specific evaluation design was developed to address each site's needs. Resultant evaluation strategies include experimental, quasi- experimental pre-post, and quasi-experimental cohort designs. In addition, a few sites are involved with purely qualitative evaluation strategies. In 1999-2000, data collection began, using a standardized instrument across all sites. Initial evaluation data will be presented.

Learning Objectives: 1. At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to describe the strategies used to implement an abstince-only sexuality program in Pennsylvania. 2. At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to explain the importance of site specific evaluation designs when evaluating abstinence-only programs
