Racism in health care: Symptom of a larger sickness

Dr. Geiger will briefly review the evidence of racial and ethnic disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of and what we now know of the underlying mechanisms, personal and structural. During the discussion, he will also present points about the range of possible remedies.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the entire 2-part session (#4223 & 4290), the participant will be able to: 1) describe the functions of bias and racism in U.S. society 2) explain the manifestations of bias, discrimination, and racism within the health care system, legal/criminal justice system, and other disciplinary arenas 3) discuss the manner in which the media and cultural institutions promote bias and racism in the public consciousness 4) identify strategies to unite diverse groups to overcome bias and to address racism and other discriminatory practices
