Abstract #18187

Closing the dropout/pushout disparity: Challenging institutional bias in schools

M. Nell Myhand, BS, Director of Programs, TODOS Institute, 1203 Preservation Park Way, Oakland, CA 94612, 510/444-6448, todos@igc.org

Students of color and poor students of all colors drop out of school at rates greatly disproportionate to their numbers. How do institutional racism, sexism, and other forms of bias push students of color and poor students out of schools? This presentation will examine the role of adult allies in challenging institutional bias in schools and offer effective and easy to implement strategies to close the dropout/pushout rate disparity among youth.
