Context. Despite the fewest AIDS cases of US ethnic/racial groups, Asian and Pacific Islanders (APIs) have elevated infection rates where population clusters exist. This underscores the need for HIV prevention for APIs. The Theory of Reasoned Action and Self-efficacy provide the conceptual framework for the study. Objective. The purpose is to examine the factors affecting abstinence or condom use behaviors among API adolescents. Design. This study is a cross-sectional survey. 100 API adolescents will be recruited in New York City. Data will be collected via self-administered questionnaire. Instrument. Asian acculturation scale developed by Suinn-Lew was used. The following scales were developed based on the theories and existing instruments: attitude scale, behavioral belief scale, subjective norm scale, normative belief scale, motivation to comply scale, and self-efficacy scale for abstinence from sex and for condom use. Sexual abstinence behavior, condom use behavior, and demographic background questions were included. Participants. Inclusion criteria was adolescents who: 1) are 15 to 18 year olds, 2) have self-identified Asian ethnicity, 3) received parental permission for under 18 years old, and 4) can read and understand in English. Sampling. Two recruitment methods were utilized. One was to recruit participants on the street nearby high schools in New York. The other was to recruit through a church youth group. Results.
