In June 1995, the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc., and the Coalition of National Health Education Organizations, USA, convened an invitational forum in Atlanta, Georgia, to consider the future of the health education profession. Representatives from nine health education professional organizations were asked to identify current and emerging challenges for the health education profession and activities needed to address these challenges. The group identified actions needed both internal and external to the profession in six focal areas: promoting the profession, research, advocacy, professional preparation, quality assurance, and dynamic/contemporary practice. This presentation will summarize the work of the national professional organizations in accomplishing these activities since 1995, and suggest future directions for both individuals and organizations to ensure the viability and growth of the health education profession in the 21st century.
