The Competencies Update Project (CUP) was initiated by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) in 1998 to determine the degree to which the role definition of the entry-level health educator is still current, and to continue the development of the advanced-level competencies. The entry-level competencies have served as the basis for credentialing certified health education specialists (CHES) for more than a decade. The CUP Advisory Committee, comprising representatives from 12 national organizations, is providing support and direction to this current research project whose results will ultimately impact professional preparation, certification, and professional development/continuing education of health educators. This presentation will review progress of the various CUP phases, including preliminary fact finding, a 6-step pilot, major research, and final reports. Additional information is available on the CUP webpage (www.nchec.org/cupproj.htm).
