Laura Kolb, MPH, Indoor Environments Division, US Environmental Protection Agency, 202-564-9438, kolb.laura@epa.gov

More than 17 million Americans have asthma and asthma is the leading cause of long-term illness in children. Asthma attacks may be triggered by allergens and irritants that are common in homes. Take steps to decrease indoor asthma triggers such as secondhand smoke, dust mites, pets, molds, and pests.

Steps you can take to reduce indoor asthma triggers in the home: Choose not to smoke in your home; Wash sheets and blankets once a week in hot water; Keep pets out of bedrooms and other sleeping areas; Clean up mold and get rid of excess water or moisture.
