Nutrition assessment: Training prospective nutrition practitioners

Nutrition assessment: Training prospective nutrition practitioners.

Learning nutritional assessment techniques can aid prospective dietitians, community nutritionists, health educators, sports nutritionists, and physical educators, in assisting clients to achieve their health-related goals. Good nutritional status is critical to health and physical performance. Steps in the assessment process include obtaining diet history, nutrient intake analysis, anthropometric measurements, and recognizing physical signs of malnutrition.

Recent trends in assessment will be reviewed, including: screening, nutrient intake analysis, retrospective data, determining appropriate weight for height and "adjusted desirable body weight," determining energy needs, body composition standards and measuring techniques, clinical examination, and biochemical analysis

Learning Objectives: After attending this session, participants will be able to: 1. Explain the major aspects of nutriton assessment. 2. Evaluate nutritional status through measurement of food and nutrient intake. 3. Appraise nutrition-related health indicators. 4. Explain several examples of history, physical examination, anthropometic and biochemical indicators of nutritional status
