Objective: To present findings from field testing a CD-ROM instructional program designed to teach providers strategies to increase adult vaccination rates.

Background: In the United States during an average year, over 30,000 adults die of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Many adults could be protected against VPDs if more providers implemented strategies known to be effective in increasing adult vaccination rates. A computer-based instructional program on vaccination strategies has been developed and is being field tested to assess user response to the program.

Methods: A field test of this CD-ROM program is planned for spring 2000, to be conducted in two phases. The alpha phase will be conducted locally to allow developers to observe reviewers’ interaction with the program and to test the installation routine. During the beta phase, developers will mail the CD-ROM and User’s Guide to reviewers located throughout the United States. A questionnaire will be included to collect feedback on reviewers’ responses, determine CD-ROM compatibility with reviewers’ computers, and evaluate the User’s Guide.

Results: The field test findings will provide information to developers on: (1) installation, (2) navigation, (3) appropriateness of content, (4) user response to program features, (5) user interest in a computer-based delivery format, and (6) completeness/clarity of the User’s Guide. Using these findings, developers will make final revisions to the program.

Conclusions: Field testing this CD-ROM program is essential to ensure that the program will work in the user’s computer environment and that the content and functionality are acceptable to the target audience.

Learning Objectives: 1. List four components of the CD-ROM program that should be assessed during field testing. 2. Discuss at least two strengths and two weaknesses of the CD-ROM program as indicated from field test results
