The Monroe County Health Department in Rochester, NY has been designated one of three national Health Alert Network (HAN) Centers for Public Health Preparedness. The Monroe County government maintains a wide area network that connects public safety agencies and individual responders using hardwired and wireless technology. The Rochester Health Information Group, Inc. maintains a wide area network that connects all of the major health care provider agencies in Monroe County. The Monroe County HAN was created on these two previously established networks. The goals of the Monroe County HAN are to enhance communication among public health officials, public safety officials and responders and medical care providers before, during and after emergency events. Before such events the HAN can be used for training and planning purposes. During an event, the HAN can be used to communicate technical and medical information, to coordinate the response activities, and to report on the status of the event.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, the participants will be able to (1) discuss the purpose of the local health alert network, (2) identify the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specifications for the network, and (3) describe the structure of the local health alert network in Monroe County, New York
