Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in Cyprus. This study will primarily attempt to identify the motivational cognitive factors associated with the decision to get an initial screening mammogram. These factors refer to attitude, social influence, self-efficacy and perceived control of behavior. Second, the study will attempt to predict under what circumstances an asymptomatic Cypriot woman will most likely get an initial screening mammogram. The research design consists of a cross-sectional survey which took place at the outpatient clinics of the General Hospital of Nicosia during the fall of 1999. The sample was comprised of 290 women, 40-65 years old, who visited the outpatient clinics. The sample was divided into two groups. The first group included women who never had a mammogram but were scheduled to get one within hours following the interview. The second group included women who never had a mammogram and were not scheduled to get one within the next six months. The statistical analysis of the data is in process and the results are expected to be completed in May. The study will attempt to answer the following research questions: a. Which are the specific salient motivations related to the initial breast cancer screening? b. How are these motivations associated with the intention of getting an initial screening mammogram? c. How are these motivations associated with the actual behavior of getting a screening mammogram? d. How are these motivations differ from the ones identified in similar international studies?

Learning Objectives: 1. By the end of the session the participant will be able to list the most salient motivations of the Cypriot women related to initial breast cancer screening. 2. By the end of the session the participant will be able to desrcibe how are these motivations associated with the intention and actual behavior of getting an initial screening mammogram. 3. By the end of the session, the participant will be able to compare these motivations with the motivations of other international women regarding breast cancer screening
